This is one of my favorites so far of the Rougon-Macquart series (I'm reading using the reading order suggested by Zola, rather than the publication order). The detailed description of the market at Les Halles, people and comestibles included, were so realistic and so gripping. I also felt that the tension that Zola developed between the idealistic Florent who is driven by the trauma of his false arrest and deportation, with the concerns of his sister-in-law, Lisa Quenu, who just wants to keep her family prosperous and happy (as well as beating down her rivals in the market) is a wonderful way of laying out the opposing points of view without taking sides. In addition, the depiction of how people gossip and spread half-truths and lies was striking and realistic.

While I LOVE Zola and read French easily, I find this format to be WAY too large. I'd much rather have a "Livre de poche". The format is big and awkward.
We can smeel the vegetables and fruits in the streets of Paris! Not missing the story and the curiosity it brings! I recommend!
The font was too small and the pages too big. It was akin to reading legal documents, not a paperback novel.
Zola was read for the first time, but I did not know the thing so interesting. First, I read the Japanese translation, I tried to read the original text because it was too interesting at first. I read the original text and translation of Au Bonheur des Dames from it. I was addicted to Balzac few years but I seem to be addicted to Zola this time. Also I wanted to go to breathe the air of Paris.
The story itself was great, but the quality of the book was not great. There were a lot of typos, some of them probably due to incompatible computer software as they came back consistently throughout the book - I thought that was pretty lame in this day and age when getting the proper fonts is not that difficult. Also, I found that the pages could get separated from the book very easily, so it needed to be handled with great care.
So I would definitely recommend reading that book, but if possible not in that edition.
Les Halles -- the traditional food basket of Paris. Or, ad the title says, in French, the stomach of Paris. Zola, as usual, captures every general impression at the same time as every detail of this Paris story of the struggling, the poor, the culture. For any of us who have ever said "yummy" when eating in Paris -- a MUST-READ, whether in French or in some other language. Zola rocks!
