A guide to the rapidly progressing Age of Biotechnology, Brutes or Angels provides basic information on a wide array of new technologies in the life sciences, along with the ethical issues raised by each.

With stem cell research, Dolly the cloned sheep, in vitro fertilization, age retardation, and pharmaceutical mind enhancement, humankind is now faced with decisions that it has never before had to consider. The thoughtfulness, or lack of it, that we bring to those decisions will largely determine the future character of the living world.

Brutes or Angels will facilitate informed choice making about the personal use of biotechnologies and the formulation of public policies governing their development and use. Ten biotechnologies that impact humans are considered stem cell research, embryo selection, human genomics, gene therapies, human reproductive cloning, age retardation, cognition enhancement, the engineering of nonhuman organisms, nanobiology, and synthetic biology.

James T. Bradley introduces important biological principles and the basic procedures used in biotechnology. Various ethical issues - personhood, personal identity, privacy, ethnic discrimination, distributive justice, authenticity and human nature, and the significance of mortality in the human life cycle - are presented in a clear and unbiased manner.

An excellent primer for the non-biologist on this very important issue. This book was used very successfully by its author as the text for a continuing education/lifelong learning course for a diverse group of students mostly with non-science backgrounds.

Brutes or Angels Human Possibility in the Age of Biotechnology (Audible Audio Edition) Professor Emeritus James T Bradley PhD Michael Morgan University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews

This book proved an excellent resource for group discussions of the state of the art in biotechnology in early 2014. The material is well summarized so as to cover complex scientific advances together with many associated ethical issues. Dr. Bradley met the challenge of producing a very readable summary suitable for a broad readership including those with a relatively meager scientific background while retaining the interest of those more familiar with the scientific basis of the issues.
James Bradley is a scientist, and he presents enough basic genetics to keep the more exploratory chapters from sounding like Isaac Asimov science fiction. In these later chapters, redesigning the human body and mind for various medical reasons, for chasing immortality or for any number of good and bad reasons, is considered. One chapter considers the richness and the dangers of these approaches. This book is thought provoking, and it will stir your imagination.
An outstanding look at what lies for humankind in an age the likes of which humanity has never known before..

Blending science with easily understood prose, this book takes a serious but fascinating look at what it will mean to be human in years to come and in a not too distant future. For the first time, through genetic engineering, man can not only determine who and what he is, but also predetermine the attributes and talents his children, who and what he wants them to be.

Does the term "playing God" comes to mind? It is not an inappropriate analagy.

How will man handle the ability to create and develop new life forms? How will we choose to adapt, change or genetically engineer the lives we have now as individuals? And what of our children, now that we can genetically engineer them to be who and what we want them to be? Shouldn't they have some say in who they are and what they are? But those determinations will be made long before they are born by genetic engineering decisions their parents make or dont make, decisions from which there is no return.

Interesting, perplexing and perhaps a little scary; certainly much different from the lives and science we have known. The world is changing, not in the future, but now, right now, even as you read these words. And the challenges/opportunities/responsibilities are almost unfathomable.

As the eminent and erstwhile Dr. Gerald Johnson has noted, "Ethical questions inherent to the next generation of science and religion relationships related to us humans will make our curent ethical dilemma seem rather piddling, however important..."

Some would say there is too much science here, but don't let the science scare you off. Even if you can't or don't want to of understand the science, read the book. The perspectives on possibility and probiblity, dilemma and responsibility make this a very valuable read. It is a good first step toward educating ourselves about the decisions we, as individuals and humankind, will be forced to make in the not too distant future.

The opportunities, challenges--and dangers-- of genetic engineering may not be as "sexy" as space exploration, but it will have a far greater impact on life as we know it. Space is a hobby. Genetic engineering is the stuff of which life will be made, shaped and formed.

Not in "the life to come," but in your lifetime.
Nice overview of modern biotechnologies. Used as the basis for student research and essay writing in a biotechnology course. Excellent condition, arrived on time.
An excellent primer for the non-biologist on this very important issue. This book was used very successfully by its author as the text for a continuing education/lifelong learning course for a diverse group of students mostly with non-science backgrounds.
